Summary

Maia D’Apliese and her five sisters gather together at their childhood home, “Atlantis”—a fabulous, secluded castle situated on the shores of Lake Geneva—having been told that their beloved father, who adopted them all as babies, has died。 Each of them is handed a tantalizing clue to her true heritage—a clue which takes Maia across the world to a crumbling mansion in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil。 Once there, she begins to put together the pieces of her story and its beginnings。

Eighty years earlier in Rio’s Belle Epoque of the 1920s, Izabela Bonifacio’s father has aspirations for his daughter to marry into the aristocracy。 Meanwhile, architect Heitor da Silva Costa is devising plans for an enormous statue, to be called Christ the Redeemer, and will soon travel to Paris to find the right sculptor to complete his vision。 Izabela—passionate and longing to see the world—convinces her father to allow her to accompany him and his family to Europe before she is married。 There, at Paul Landowski’s studio and in the heady, vibrant cafes of Montparnasse, she meets ambitious young sculptor Laurent Brouilly, and knows at once that her life will never be the same again。

In this sweeping, epic tale of love and loss—the first in a unique, spellbinding series of seven novels—Lucinda Riley showcases her storytelling talent like never before。

It‘s a good summer-read - nice to get lost into a story。 Unfortunately the writing wasn’t fascinating (choice of words and transitions between characters)。 I might read the other books of her another time。

What an amazing and unique story。 I love the complexity of multiple stories happening at the same time。 There is so much to love and the characters completely come to life in this book。 I was regularly surprised by twists in the book。 So well written, I can’t wait to read the next one!

I really loved the dual timeline, I love a bit of historical fiction, and it mixed perfectly with the current day Maias adventures round Rio。 I also loved the romance aspects of both timelines。 I think as soon as Maia set foot in Rio the story really started for me。 The details of Maias upbringing and house and enormous privilege at the start were a bit much but I did like that she was a translator。 A perfect blend of genres, I just found the start a little slow。 Looking forward to reading the n I really loved the dual timeline, I love a bit of historical fiction, and it mixed perfectly with the current day Maias adventures round Rio。 I also loved the romance aspects of both timelines。 I think as soon as Maia set foot in Rio the story really started for me。 The details of Maias upbringing and house and enormous privilege at the start were a bit much but I did like that she was a translator。 A perfect blend of genres, I just found the start a little slow。 Looking forward to reading the next one now! 4。5/ 5 stars 。。。more

Sorry, but this book made me laugh out loud。 It was not so amusing, but the events were at times ridiculously cliché。 It has a strange way of describing events。 I suppose it simply wasn't my style。 Points for effort, though。 Sorry, but this book made me laugh out loud。 It was not so amusing, but the events were at times ridiculously cliché。 It has a strange way of describing events。 I suppose it simply wasn't my style。 Points for effort, though。 。。。more

There's something about the dual narrative of past and present; immersing the reader in the past while filling in the gaps made apparent with hindsight。 The present-day character, invested in uncovering the past。Izabela's narrative, set 1927, Rio de Janeiro and then Paris, has all the markers of a good story。 A determined young woman, an alluring artist, love, longing; set against the backdrop of actual historical figures and events that add interest, personality and purpose to this immensely en There's something about the dual narrative of past and present; immersing the reader in the past while filling in the gaps made apparent with hindsight。 The present-day character, invested in uncovering the past。Izabela's narrative, set 1927, Rio de Janeiro and then Paris, has all the markers of a good story。 A determined young woman, an alluring artist, love, longing; set against the backdrop of actual historical figures and events that add interest, personality and purpose to this immensely enjoyable fiction。While I thoroughly enjoyed the modern day story of Maia, Izabela's is the story that left a lasting impression。Highly recommend for lovers of historical fiction, especially those wishing to embark on a series that will surely continue to feed this love。 。。。more

This review has been hidden because it contains spoilers。 To view it, click here。 I'm really disappointed by the story in this book。 The idea of Pa Salt adopting girls and naming them for a celestial constellation seems so magical。 Each book is supposed to delve into the history of one sister。 So, you look forward to hear what made Maia's story so touching that Pa Salt would adopt her。。。But then the story is about her grandparents, who had very little to do with the story of her adoption。 And Pa Salt seemingly didn't know anything about her when he adopted her, so what about I'm really disappointed by the story in this book。 The idea of Pa Salt adopting girls and naming them for a celestial constellation seems so magical。 Each book is supposed to delve into the history of one sister。 So, you look forward to hear what made Maia's story so touching that Pa Salt would adopt her。。。But then the story is about her grandparents, who had very little to do with the story of her adoption。 And Pa Salt seemingly didn't know anything about her when he adopted her, so what about her story was so touching? I really felt taken for a ride。 If there are answers, they won't be in this book。 So, I read reviews on the 7th book and realised that the author either doesn't have answers, or will draw the series out as much as possible before giving them。 If the secondary story (about her grandparents) was at least gripping I would maybe have tried the second book, but it was really just a very ordinary love story about a silly young girl whom you just wanted to slap at times。 There are better books out there。 So, I bid this series adieu。 。。。more

Had heard great reports of this series of books but found the actual plot in this first book rather childish/ like a fairytale。 Enjoyed the part about Rio and the statue of Christ the Redeemer, but the rest was pure fantasy。 However I will try another 。

I have been struggling lately to find the time and a book I wanted to be hooked in on and not put aside unfinished。 This book had very mixed reviews, but it got me back on track to be a reader again and shut the tv off。 A little corny, but with all the elements I want in a book。 Love stories all over, a bit of history and places I will never see, some sadness, an okay ending (setting you up for book two in the series), not overly descriptive or corny。。。 I will definitely read/listen to book two I have been struggling lately to find the time and a book I wanted to be hooked in on and not put aside unfinished。 This book had very mixed reviews, but it got me back on track to be a reader again and shut the tv off。 A little corny, but with all the elements I want in a book。 Love stories all over, a bit of history and places I will never see, some sadness, an okay ending (setting you up for book two in the series), not overly descriptive or corny。。。 I will definitely read/listen to book two this summer。 。。。more
